Originally a quaint church, Maison de Bretagne has been lovingly restored to offer a cozy retreat in the heart of Rome. With a rich heritage dating back to the 12th century, our bed and breakfast combines traditional charm with modern comforts.
The current church was built near or on an ancient medieval church, Sant'Andrea de Mortarariis, whose oldest evidence is a papal bull by Pope Innocent II (first half of the 12th century). The name derives from the brotherhood of marble workers in Rome: in fact, in later documents the church uses the name de marmorariis.
Pope Nicholas V, in the 15th century, granted the church to the Bretons as their national church, confirmed by Pope Callixtus III with the papal bull Rationi congruit of 20 April 1455. The church had a hospice for French pilgrims annexed to it. This ancient church was most likely destroyed in the 16th century and rebuilt with the title of Sant'Ivo: of the medieval church only the bell tower remained, but it also collapsed in 1875. This new church, which was the parish seat until 1824, left in a state of abandonment and continually flooded by the floods of the Tiber, was demolished in 1875.
In place of the old place of worship, the French government took steps to rebuild a new church dedicated to Sant'Ivo in a place near the previous one: the facade of the new church in fact, the work of Luca Carimini in 1888, is located on the opposite side of the demolished one.
During the construction of the new church, ancient remains and vestiges were found, today preserved in the palace annexed to the church of San Luigi dei francesi
